  • GHMT Kompetenztage 2025

    Objective of the Event:

The 20th GHMT Kompetenztage took place from May 6th to May 8th, 2025, in Homburg/Saar, as part of the annual, continuous knowledge exchange among experts in the network industry.

The GHMT Kompetenztage is a three-day professional event held annually, focusing on the exchange and dissemination of technical knowledge in the field of data center and network infrastructure particularly in wired and wireless communications. The aim is to support various user groups—ranging from end-users and planners to manufacturers and suppliers—in solving complex technical issues. The event particularly addresses topics that require interdisciplinary clarification or specialized knowledge, such as the interpretation of varying measurement results across different standards regions (e.g., USA vs. Europe), frequency usage challenges in wireless technologies, network functionality impacts, and interactions with other trades (e.g., electrical power distribution networks and equipotential bonding affecting network technology).

The event connects experts from various industries, companies, and countries to present lectures, participate in discussions, and share best practices. The goal is to foster collaboration, resolve standardization conflicts, and develop innovative solutions for challenges in communication technology. This top-tier event thrives on the quality of its non-commercial technical presentations and the opportunity to engage with speakers and participants in a pleasant atmosphere to find constructive solutions.

Especially against the backdrop of rapid technological developments—such as the infrastructure demands of artificial intelligence, new EU-wide cybersecurity requirements, or the latest advancements in 5G/6G/WLAN frequencies—a broad and in-depth technical perspective was essential.

A Selection of Topics from the GHMT Kompetenztage 2025:

    Technical Insight into the Event:

The event started with a discussion on how sustainability in IT cabling can be implemented under the globally applicable standard introduced in 2025, and what options exist for both existing and new passive IT infrastructures. Subsequent technical presentations in the field of passive IT infrastructure included topics such as:

    • Regulatory and legal aspects concerning harmonized market rules for the placing and availability of construction products in the context of the sustainability requirements of the new EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR).

    • Various approaches to the placing and provision of sustainable IT cabling, extending beyond European recommendations to include international perspectives.

    • The relevance of robust cabling in industrial networks and the potential advantages of on-site cable system assembly in various industrial applications.

    • The "GHMT Premium Verification Program – GHMT PVP", which was successfully introduced to the market more than twenty years ago. A retrospective was provided on the development and introduction of this verification program, as well as its impact on the quality of examined products in national and international markets up to the present day.

    • How data center architecture is fundamentally changing due to artificial intelligence, the role of new connectors, and why the effort required for cabling and installation will multiply.

    • Voltage stability in our power supply network in connection with the current boom in the data center market and potential supply bottlenecks.

In the following wireless segment, the two prominent wireless technologies—WLAN and mobile networks—were the initial focus, especially current frequency regulations and the expansion into new frequency ranges to meet growing demands. Further topics discussed by the participants included:

    • Market trends toward flexible and integrated wireless platforms, and how the diversity of technologies and varying global frequency regulations affect the development of wireless solutions.

    • Specific requirements of the new EU Cybersecurity Directive for devices, including practical examples of installations.

    • Successful IoT wireless networks using LoRaWAN as a case study, along with the challenges of planning and deploying such industrial networks and how to avoid pitfalls in advance.

    • The use of various wireless solutions for Real-Time Location Services, the practical challenges they face, and the achievable performance.

    • Developments in 6G and the transition from 5G to 6G, particularly the realistic implementation of 6G in the coming years.

During the breaks, participants also had the opportunity to learn about current testing methods and procedures at the GHMT AG booths.

    Event Summary:

With more than 80 external participants, the event once again confirmed the importance of continuous knowledge transfer and exchange of experience for end customers, planners, and suppliers. GHMT AG would like to sincerely thank the speakers and participants of the GHMT Kompetenztage 2025, whose contributions helped make this expert event a success! Your participation and feedback motivate us!

We look forward to welcoming you again next year at the GHMT Kompetenztage 2026!
