The 14th "GHMT Kompetenztage", the trend-setting platform for the exchange of knowledge amongst experts in the networking industry, took place at Homburg/Saar from March 8-10, 2016.

Over the three days of the event, 22 technical talks by speakers of national and international renown focussed on new developments in standards, technology trends and test innovations. The presentations from the world of wired and wireless communications were characterized by relevance, a high technical level and purely factual information. Participants were enthused by the hands-on contributions of well-known innovative and quality-conscious users.

From a technological point of view, the cabling of data centres and terminal devices continues to be subject to changes. Important current developments such as PoE (with 100 Watt and higher output) and category 8 (for 25, 40, 50 GBaseT applications) over shielded systems were discussed in the conference track on copper against this background. As far as optical fibres are concerned, the question, more than ever before, is the extent to which single- or multi-mode fibres should be preferred. Further work must be done in connection with carrier and data centre infrastructure for 100 and 400 GBaseT applications as well as passive optical networks. Long-term trends were also taken into account in addition to these technological developments, which may impact cabling requirements directly. The panel discussion with manufacturers and end users focussed on optical-fibre cabling in data centres of the future. The impact of Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Software Defined Data Centers (SDDC) on cabling concepts in data centres was also discussed.

A test set-up for measuring how cables heat up was also exciting. The participants were able to observe in a live demo that continuous power supply to a fully insulated horizontal cable of a specific design (usually used for bulkheads) may lead to critical temperature levels (far above 100 degrees Celsius) within a few hours. Hands-on presentations by end users again emphasised the urgent need for end-to-end quality assurance for cabling, from the specification documents right through to inspection during installation.

Radio technology remains a dynamic subject, presenting a large number of challenges to IT decision-makers and managers. Gigabit WLAN as well as 5G mobile radio technology with bit rates in the two-digit Gigabit range will facilitate the increase in wireless data transfer over a skyrocketing number of mobile devices. Pioneering technologies such as the Internet of Things or Industry 4.0 should also be able to benefit from this.

Various technologies (WLAN, Beacon) for indoor navigation and localisation were explained against the backdrop of increasing networking, among other things by Industry 4.0 as well as new customer services, for example at airports or in hospitals, requiring secure locational identification of things and persons. New technical approaches for future radio communication were presented from a scientific angle. These are not only to help manage the huge data volumes to be expected but also to facilitate more security.

Some of these will or have already become reality, as illustrated by recent reports presented by end users from an Industry 4.0 project and the implementation of state-of-the-art WLAN-based convenience offerings to passengers at an international airport. The final presentation of the GHMT Kompetenztage 2016 offered participants an insight into worldwide radio technology trends and related radio regulation straight from the WRC (World Radiocommunication Conference) in Geneva.

The participants were also impressed by a new development from GHMT to facilitate end-to-end data recording and its efficient evaluation as well as the monitoring of communication between WLAN access points and WLAN terminals over a large number of channels.

The high turnout (in excess of 110 participants) confirmed once again how important the continuous transfer of knowledge and the exchange of experience is for end customers, planners and suppliers.

GHMT AG would like to sincerely thank (the speakers and participants) everyone at GHMT Kompetenztage 2016 for making the event such a success.

We look forward to welcoming you to the GHMT Kompetenztage 2017!
